Employee Engagement & Waste Management

Employee engagement and waste management may not be the sexiest of titles but it certainly peaked my interest. As a marketeer it brings together the two key threads of i) How to get employees on board with desired changes behaviour and ii) How do we tackle the waste we produce at work?

Plastic pollution in the environment is a hot topic, but many of us still act as if it is somebody else's problem. We might carefully sort our waste into different bins at home, washing it first (in my case to deter foxes) but what happens when we get to work? In my office it all goes into the one bin...

This is a common problem for many companies. Yet all businesses have to pay for the waste they produce.

How can we as responsible businesses tackle this issue?

I recently attended an excellent seminar hosted by Facilties Management Journal. This highlighted;

•    Build effective relations with your waste contractor. Engage with them to see what additional bins or recommendations they can make
•    Get your employees involved. Identify a 'champion' to be the people's voice
•    Ask your employees what you should do. Don't tell them
•    Give them the support and budget they need to get the recycle/reduce/reuse message across.

The Benefits to Business
•    Every kilo less of waste sent to landfill will cost you less/save you money
•    Every ream of paper you DON'T buy saves you money (and further reduces waste)
•    Properly sorted waste increases recycling and saves you money

We can't leave it to our children to sort out the mess we make. Employees will follow where a clear and committed lead is made.

What can your company do to reduce it's impact on the environment?

What suggestions do you have we can all share?
